Architect: Grain Architecture
Main Contractor: Built by Artizans
Andy worked on this Grain Architecture project at all stages from inception to construction including providing assistance during construction. Deep retrofit and alterations to a historic timber frame cottage in Surrey with existing masonry extensions. The walls have been insulated with cast hempcrete insulation which locks up carbon for the lifetime of the building, helps manage internal temperature and humidity. The roof has ben insulated with woodfibre insulation, the floor, a mix of concrete and suspended timber ahs been replaced throughout with a limecrete floor, cast lime screed over insualting recycled foamed glass aggregate. All the windows and doors have been replaced with high performance triple glazed units from Nordan. The internal layout of the house has been rearanged to make better use of space and the heating system has been relpaced with a new air souce heat pump with underfloor heating and low flow temperature radiators. Fresh air is provided by a new Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system with ensures good internal air quality with minimal loss of heat in winter. And a large PV Solar array to the south roof generates renewable electricity.
