Andy Hales

An Architect and Certified Passivhaus Designer with a focus on sustainable buildings and construction techniques. After working for several years as an Architect and then Director at Grain Architecture, in 2026 Andy started a new practice focused on sustainable retrofit, low energy design, and consultancy based in Leamington Spa as both an Architect, helping clients design & deliver sustainable projects, and as a consultant providing technical advice, thermal bridging calculations, and Passivhaus Design services.

Andy previously worked with Gresford Architects in London, who specialise in Passivhaus and low-energy Architecture and Anne Netherwood, a Conservation Architect based near Oswestry. He was also a group coordinator of the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Natural Materials Group for 1.5 years.

Andy enjoys helping to achieve clients' aims by creating healthy and enjoyable places to live and work whilst minimising environmental impact. He is experienced at running domestic extension & alteration projects, restorations, retrofits (commercial, domestic, and ecclesiastical), domestic new builds, and civic and community projects.​
Following an undergraduate course in architecture at the University of Cambridge, Andy worked as a Part I Architectural Assistant at Greenspace Architects in Ellesmere, primarily working on existing buildings doing restorations and conversions (commercial, domestic, and ecclesiastical), and domestic new builds.
Andy studied his Part 2 at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth. The course set architecture in the broader context in which we work, with a particular focus on how we can adapt to climate change and help mitigate its effects. During and after this course Andy worked as a freelance Architectural designer.

Andy completed his Architectural training at the University of Bath. He followed this by training to be a Certified Passivhaus Designer on the AECB CarbonLite Passivhaus Designer course and recently became an AECB Approved CarbonLite Newbuild Certifier & Modeller.
Whitchurch Civic Centre - Andy worked on the technical design of this retrofit and extension to a dilapidated brutalist building for Greenspace Architects.
