Bungalow Retrofit & Alterations
Andy worked on this Grain Architecture project as contract administrator assiting with the construction process and dealing with issues as they arose on site. Deep retrofit and alterations to a brick & render cavity wall bungalow, including woodfibre external wall insulation (EWI), loft conversion, and internal alterations. The building was transformed from a small single bungalow with low ceilings to a 2 storey, 3 bed house with a study mezzanine. The rooms to the south were combined to create a large kitchen/dining/living with the roof trussses and ceiling removed to make it a double height space. The house has been insulated with Rigid Woodfibre EWI, cavitiy insulation, and woodfibre insulation in the roof. This has significantly improved the bungalow's thermal performance. The old gas boiler has been replaced with a low carbon Air Source Heat pump and underfloor heating system. A continuous airtight layer has been created on the inside of the external walls/roof/floor using airtight membrane and tape, with fresh air provided by a new Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) system with ensures good internal air quality with minimal loss of heat in winter.
